Pirozhki: The Meat Dumplings of Russia

By Max Dudkin    08.01.23

As a Russian-American living in NYC, I eat many different types of cuisines. However, I also have some of my favorite food of my ethnicity. One that I highly recommend for anyone to try is pirozhki (пирожки). Pirozhki is basically a Russian meat dumpling.

I used to eat these all the time from the now-defunct Brighton Bizarre, which was a Russian supermarket located on Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. The dough is usually greasy, but good; and it is filled with various types of meat. Pirozhki is also a common delicacy in Balkan and Central Asian countries.

In recent years, the pirozhki that I have tried is by Uzbek people: usually with the same type of ingredients though I have tried an Uzbek pirozhki that has the filling being a pumpkin.
