Geralyn Mercado Sosa    02.01.25

Daisy is like a computer person like her brother was. And Daisy's there to communicate with her and comfort her. Chapter one follows Teru as she's being bullied by the student council for being poor, basically. And in the process she breaks a window so now she has to help the custodian, Tessuku, like the gardens and stuff as her punishment. And in the process she uncovers this whole scheme at the school where teachers stealing money using computers like hack into the system. So she asked Daisy to help her out, help the school out and expose the teacher in the process. The reader finds out that Tessuku is actually Daisy, but Teru doesn't find out.

Dengeki Daisy one of those defining series for me in high school that really shaped my taste in media when I was 14 or 15. What really stood out to me at the time was that, despite having tried and true shoujo tropes like romance and being set in a high school, it’s the subversion of the tropes that really gripped me and made me stay.

Teru is a very confident and funny protagonist, and though it’s set in a high school, having the drama and narrative be framed around technology and the ethical issues that come with hacking, there are tangible stakes to the drama and the consequences for the protagonists. Despite the technology being outdated, it doesn’t take away from the appeal of the story.
