Dengeki Daisy Volume 1 Manga Review: Does the Romance Hold Up?
So the story follows this girl named Teru who’s in high school and lost her older brother, and she’s basically alone now except for her phone, which sounds relatable honestly. Before he passed, her brother left her a cell phone and told her that whenever she’s in trouble she should text a contact saved as “Daisy,” and this mysterious person will help her out. That’s literally the whole emotional core of the book, this idea that someone is looking out for you even when you feel completely on your own.
At school, Teru gets caught up in some drama when she accidentally breaks a window, and instead of getting in trouble she ends up having to work off the debt doing chores under this scary looking janitor named Kurosaki, who is honestly kind of mean to her at first, teasing her and acting all cold. But as the volume goes on you start noticing little moments where he’s actually paying attention to her in ways nobody else is, like he notices when she’s hurting even when she’s trying to hide it.
There’s also this whole subplot with Teru’s friends and some boys at school who get weirdly territorial over her, plus a running gag about Kurosaki always making her do humiliating chores like digging through trash, which is funny but also kind of sweet once you realize why he keeps her close. By the end of the volume you’re left with this warm confused feeling, like you trust Daisy completely but you’re not sure who to trust in real life, and that gap is what makes you want to keep reading.
Okay so for Volume 2, I feel like the tension between Kurosaki being harsh and Daisy being gentle is going to get more obvious, maybe some near misses where Teru almost figures something out. I’m predicting more backstory on her brother, and honestly I think Kurosaki starts being nicer whether he wants to admit it or not.
