Taylor: Speak Now or Forever Hold your Peace

By Emily Chen    11.22.23

After nearly a year of speculation, Taylor Swift’s new album Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) has finally been released. But with this re-release of ab earlier album there has been quite a bit of controversy involving one of the most streamed songs on the album.

Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) dropped on July 7, 2023. This was one of, if not the most, anticipated album releases of the year. The album has already reached No. 1 on the billboard top 200 making Taylor Swift the only female artist to have 12 albums reach No. 1 on the charts.

The lyric in Swifts 10th track on the re-released album was changed from “She’s better known for the things that she does on the mattress” to “He was a moth to the flame, she was holding the matches.” This lyric change received a lot of backlash as Swifities wanted the authentic and original lyrics to be sung in the re-recording.

Ouch

I grew up listening to Speak Now, as it was one of my favorite albums, and it’s still one of my favorites to this day. When I was listening to the ‘Taylor’s Version’ for the first time, the lyric change was not only surprising but also very disappointing.

Swift has already expressed that she deeply regrets the original lyrics. But this still leaves fans divided. Some praising Swift for the maturity and some saying they liked the brutal honesty of the original lyrics.

I personally think that Swift should have kept the original lyrics. Although the lyrics are a little reckless, Better Than Revenge is my favorite song on the album and I wish it was re-recorded with the original unfiltered lyrics.
