She’s a Barbie Girl in the Real World

I watched the Barbie movie on the Saturday of its opening weekend at Regal UA Sheepshead Bay. The movie was more than just a picture perfect story about dolls going about their lives, it ended up being more complex and meaningful than it led on to be. Barbie’s existential crisis leads her to the real world where everything is quite the opposite of what she’s used to. With her emergence into our world, Barbie gets slammed with enduring life in a patriarchal society while figuring out how to deal with these negative feelings of depression, anxiety, and self-consciousness, to name a few, which she hasn’t felt before. The juxtaposition of the Barbie world and the real-world poses as sort of a reality check into our everyday lives, pointing out issues we might not have noticed before. There are many more themes you could deep dive into though, which would lead you to a rabbit hole.
