Stands by me: everything you need to know about these supernatural energy forms
What are Stands?
Stands are manifestations of a person's life energy and typically take on a humanoid form, although their appearance and abilities can vary widely. Each Stand has its own unique powers, ranging from physical combat abilities to more abstract abilities like time manipulation or healing. Stands are controlled by their users, known as Stand Users, who can summon and control them at will. The concept of Stands was introduced in the third part of the series, Stardust Crusaders, and has since become a defining feature of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
Stands add a layer of complexity and creativity to the battles in the series. Rather than relying solely on physical strength, Stand battles often require strategy, quick thinking, and a deep understanding of one's abilities and weaknesses. This has led to some of the most memorable and inventive fights in manga and anime history.
The Journey from Manga to Anime
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1987, and it quickly gained a dedicated following. Despite its popularity, it took a surprisingly long time for the manga to be adapted into a full-fledged anime series. Several factors contributed to this delay.
One reason is the unique and unconventional art style of the series. Hirohiko Araki's artwork is highly distinctive, characterized by exaggerated poses, intricate details, and a fashion-forward sensibility. This art style, while beloved by fans, posed a challenge for animation studios looking to faithfully adapt the source material.
Another factor was the sheer scale and complexity of the story. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure spans multiple generations, each with its own set of characters, settings, and plot lines. Adapting such an expansive and diverse narrative into an anime required careful planning and resources.
In 1993, a series of six original video animations (OVAs) based on the "Stardust Crusaders" arc was released. While these OVAs provided a taste of what an anime adaptation could be, they only covered a small portion of the story and did not capture the full scope of the series.
The Full Anime Adaptation
It wasn't until 2012 that "lJoJo's Bizarre Adventure received a full TV anime adaptation. The anime was produced by David Production, a studio known for its commitment to preserving the essence of the original manga while delivering high-quality animation. The first season of the anime adapted the "Phantom Blood" and "Battle Tendency" arcs, introducing audiences to the world of JoJo and the Joestar family's adventures.
Since then, the anime has continued to adapt subsequent arcs of the manga, including ‘Stardust Crusaders,"’ "Diamond is Unbreakable," "Golden Wind," "Stone Ocean," and "Steel Ball Run." Each season has been met with critical acclaim and has helped to further popularize the series both in Japan and internationally.
