Injured Mets Begin to Return

PoorBest

As September begins, the injury ravaged Mets finally begin to return. Last night David Wright returned to lineup after a stint on the DL with post-concussion symptoms. He went 1-3 while sporting a new helmet like the one which Shane Victorino wears. Carlos Beltran is going to start a rehab game in Brooklyn and could return to the Mets in 10 days. John Maine who fans have heard almost nothing about since he stopped pitching could be able to make his return some time in the middle of September. The question that everyone is asking about all 3 of these players is why bother at this point. The Mets have almost nothing to gain by bringing these players back and quite a bit to lose. Wouldn't the Mets be better off shutting down their core players until spring training in order to insure that everyone is ready to go and that 2010 will not be a repeat of this season.

I understand that both the players and the team management would like to erase any doubts about ability to play before the preseason but that should not come at the expense of exacerbating their injuries. If Carlos Beltran needs more time for his bone bruise to heal then let him call it a season and start gearing up for spring training. If John Maine won't be 100% before the end of the season then there is absolutely no reason for him to try to pitch. The Mets have to be thinking about next season and how they can best perform in 2010.
