Ke$ha vs. Uffie vs. Lady Gaga

"I just really wanted to embody the lifestyle that I live," [...] "We're all young and broke and it doesn't matter. We can find clothes on the side of the street and go out and look fantastic, and kill it. If we don't have a car that doesn't stop us, because we'll take the bus. If we can't afford drinks, we'll bring a bottle in our purse. It's just about not letting anything bring you down."  -Ke$ha on her hit Tik Tok, ripped directly from wikipedia Smile

Ever since Ke$ha's (annoyingly?) catchy song, Tik Tok, hit the air waves in the US, the competition's been on.  The song is similar to Lady Gaga's Just Dance in that it's a party song about a woman having a good ol' drunken time, and everyone's noticed.  But Lady Gaga's far too artsy and weird to be called a skank.  Not so for Ke$ha, who still enjoys her jeans and shredded t-shirt.  There's the usual malarky about how the song's not classy, it's teaching young girls to be slutty, she's slutty, she's stupid, her songs are mindless drivel.  Whatever.  It's a party song, guys.  A mainstream party song because she wants to be famous and rich so she can party even more.  Who are we to criticize?  It's a fun song.  If a party song shouldn't talk about guys and drinks, what should it talk about?  Cookies and ponies?  I doubt.  And what's this obsession with being classy?  To be a woman you must successfully balance the line of being boring and sexy to produce classy.  How about just having fun?  How about letting your hair down at a party?  And any teenager who looks towards party songs for guidance has more issues than any pop star can fix.

However, the more avant-garde and underground may have noticed similarities between Tik Tok and Uffie's (annoyingly?) catchy song, Pop the Glock, released back in 2006.  Uffie supporters claim Ke$ha is a lesser version of Uffie.  Lacking the faux-charming British accent, I suppose?  I know, I'm a sucker for those, too.  The songs both feature over-processed singers...though Uffie doesn't sing so much as talk, and have some funky beat going on in the background.  Now, I know, they're in a similar vein.  Promiscuous party girls brashly singing/talking about their lifestyles over electro-funk beats.  And their titles rhyme.  But so what?  There are so many artists who abuse autotune and catchy beats.  Britney Spears, The Millionaires, Rihanna.  Personally, I think Ke$ha's song is more mainstream, calculated, and fun.  They're definitely aiming for different things.  Ke$ha wants to be on top, Uffie wants to be original.  Ke$ha sings, Uffie rap-talks.  And Ke$ha seems to have more of a sense of humor, just check out her video for Tik Tok.  Why would a corporate company want to make another Uffie?  She's honestly not that big on the billboards or airwaves.  And why in the world would it take them three years to find their new Uffie?  Anyone who can talk would do.

Ke$ha was actually discovered around 2005 by Dr. Luke, so she's not some half-wit they picked up off the street.  I believe this means she actually started working on her career before Uffie.  Her mom was a singer/songwriter herself, so Ke$ha's grown up around music all her life.  Just because her first single was an attention grabbing club hit (And what else could it have been by today's standards?) doesn't mean that's all she can do.  She's cowritten songs for The Veronicas, Miley Cyrus, and Rihanna and has done back up vocals for artists like Britney Spears and Flo Rida.

I know I'm coming off a little intense.  I don't even know how much I'll like Ke$ha's other songs.  And I truly do still enjoy Pop the Glock.  But I'm so tired of seeing the same drivel on youtube comments.  I know you guys need other artists to compare her too, but really?  Enjoy the song and move on.  Here's to hoping my post helped with the latter Smile
